308 velocity 16 inch barrel

I have a 16.5 inch barrel Ruger youth rifle in .243.It has a stainless barrel and laminated stock.It is my carry rifle on deer drives in the woods and wet weather stand rifle.The .243 is a necked down .308 at about 2950 fps. I use 50/225 yrd for my 5.56 RDS, but have no info for 308 147gr (M80 7.62 nato). I have 3 carbines with 16" barrels. not for me at least. As far as bullet weight goes each rifle is an individual and since 300yds is your max range boat tail bullets may be a moot point. i have never gone past 18" because again the muzzle velocity increase is something like 100 ft/s from 18" -> 24". I would think the flash of the 16" would be far greater than the 21" inch since more powder burns while the bullet is still in the barrel. Quickload also calculates a 3400fps load in 24 inch barrel to 3100fps in a 16 inch barrel.
